Yes I Can Dance is about a wonderful group of heroes I had the privilege of teaching at Riverpark Center in Naples, Florida. As Director, I was asked to teach dance, voice, and performance skills, using sign language to thirty-five students. One-third of those students had handicaps/exceptionalities.
For many of these students, this was the first time students with disabilities/exceptionalities were included. They were usually excluded. The performance was at Christmas and was exceptionally wonderful!
It was extremely touching to witness how the students who had no disability/exceptionalities cared for and encouraged their fellow performers.
Special thank you to Lynn Clarke and Mercedes Fuente, The Directors of Riverpark Center in Naples Florida who were extraordinarily supportive of our program.
Special thank you to Edward Stripling, the Artist/Illustrator who made all of these heroes come alive with his magnificent paintings as well as Kathy Grey and Jennifer Summers who were editors for Yes I Can Dance.
I hope that you enjoy this lovely little book as this book is also a tribute to my Father, William Christie who had polio as a young child, limped, and was considered 'different'. He received his Master's Degree from Harvard University and is always part of any teaching that I undertake.
I am eternally grateful to my Husband, James David Carme, who has been the mainstay of support throughout all of my adventures, and for my children, Jennifer Abbondanzio, Cheri Mahan, and David Michael Carme as well as my grandsons, Shane and Brody Mahan who remind me how very blessed I am.
